Features of the structural design included:

Extensions of the gymnasium would necessarily require removal of critical bracing elements.

Systems using trusses or portal frames were examined to provide stability. A portal  frame system  was  selected due to internal height limitation.

Specified a combination of steel and timber framing to the roof to reduce costs.

New design provided improved serviceability by eliminating visual sag in the structure.
