Blue Circle Southern Cement
2200 tonne Train Loading Facility
The brief was to duplicate a 2200-tonne silo and provide a new rail/road weighbridge and weighbridge pit at the existing rail line. To avoid penalties associated with interruption of delivery to customers, the design had to facilitate installation of the weighbridge and pit in no more than nine days. GW Engineers developed a design using precast components which reduced the rail line closure time from nine days to four days.
GW Engineer’s design used precast pit sections and paid particular attention to the lifting, jacking and locating systems. Rather than duplicate the existing silo which was supported on eight columns with massive transfer beams, the GW Engineers design employed four columns and further savings were made by using 350 grade material. Innovative ideas for reorganising the bin stiffeners to reduce spans also contributed to overall cost reduction and to fast tracking the installation, which removed a significant risk factor and saw the line running again by day five.
